my problem with relationships

if we are all one sided-ly in love with another person
is it better to give up
to turn around
and embrace the person chasing after us
or is it better to hold on
to forever chase after someone else?

even if that person turned around
to fall back on your shoulders
would it suffice
knowing that you are, ultimately, still second best

there's this thin film
that holds together a fragile relationship
there's this membrane
that encases fragile people
there's a defensive mechanism at work
where strangers are allowed free entry
because they seem emotionally innocuous
the less expectation the other party has of the relationship
the safer it seems
so i let in the people who don't and won't love me in return
and in so dig the pit that i will later fall into

i often love people more than they love me
in all peculiarity, i have no idea why
perhaps i'm just more predisposed to expressing my love
rather than suppressing it

brilliance attracts me
we all chase after bright lights like stars

maybe that's why they always seem so far away.
