Tuesday, October 10
and you were there waiting, for the day that i would somehow realise, that each time you told me 'as you wish', you really were saying 'i love you'.
a father had a daughter whom he loved
because he loved her so
he would rock her on his knee
and tell her stories of hope and joy
the girl grew up a happy child
and everything she wanted
her father would smile fondly at her and reply 'as you wish'
and it would be done.
little children often drift apart from their parents
his little girl was no exception
there came the day that she asked him to stop telling her bedtime stories
to stop tucking her in at night
and the day that she no longer wanted him to walk her to school
and many days followed
when she shut him out
only to let him in to buy her whatever she wanted
she was still his little girl
and so he always replied
'as you wish'
the little girl grew up
she fell in love with the people around her
she had her heart broken time and time again
her father's house was always open,
for it was her place of refuge in times of hurt
except that she was too proud to admit it
nobody ever loved her as much as her father did
and she loved the feeling of being loved
for to be the one who is being loved
is to be set on higher ground
she ordered him around
and he always replied
'as you wish'
not to prove his love for her,
-for to deliberately try to prove one's love,
negates its existence as love.-
but because he loved her so.
then came the day
she made the most absurd request of all
'daddy' she said 'i want you to die.'
he looked at her, saddened.
'is that what you really want?'
resolutely, she reaffirmed her request
'as you wish.' was his response.
perhaps this father was being silly
he shaped and moulded his daughter
and gave her the freedom to choose
and even when she chose to turn away from him
and to spurn him
he still loved her enough to die for her.
she never really understood his love
and she died unhappy
chasing after things that wouldn't last
and people who didn't love her in return
still he watches over her
keeping her safe
waiting for the day to come
that she will realize
that each time he told her 'as you wish'
he really was telling her
'i love you.'
God's love is like this
He gives us the freedom to choose
and He longs for us to be happy
so much so that He would be willing to die for our sake
just so that we might come to know His great love for us
and in learning His great love
learn too to love the people around us.
